Cuffless blood pressure

A blood-pressure trend estimated from the wrist with no inflatable cuff.

LifeLeaf app Blood Pressure screen showing an hourly-average reading with a systolic trending-above-baseline note, above a five-day systolic and diastolic trend chart.

A traditional blood-pressure cuff works by inflating around your arm and measuring the pressure needed to stop, then restore, blood flow. It is accurate and it is also a deliberate, one-off act you have to sit still for. Cuffless blood pressure estimates the same systolic and diastolic trend continuously from the wrist, with no cuff and no inflation, using the same sensors already reading your pulse.

Why the readings are shown as an average

The trade-off is precision at any single instant. A single cuffless reading varies more than a single cuff reading does, and that gap widens at higher blood-pressure values. Rather than presenting one wrist reading as if it were a cuff-grade spot check, LifeLeaf shows blood pressure as an hourly average with a note on which way it is trending — a more honest picture of what your body is doing than a single number would be, and the reason no bare reading appears anywhere without that framing.

Calibration

Some cuffless blood-pressure products ask you to take several days of cuff readings before they will show anything, and to keep checking in against a cuff on an ongoing basis to stay in range. LifeLeaf works out of the box — no cuff, no setup readings required. If you already own a cuff or a meter and want to fine-tune your own readings against it, you can, through the app's optional device-calibration screen. Most people never do.

What it is not

  • Not a replacement for a validated cuff, and not a spot clinical reading.
  • Not a way to tell whether you have a blood-pressure condition — that's a question for a clinician with clinical equipment.
  • If a clinician has asked you to measure with a cuff, keep measuring that way.
