Heart rhythm (HRV)

The natural variation in the time between consecutive heartbeats.

LifeLeaf app Metabolic Recovery score screen listing driver rows including 'Overnight HRV rebound' alongside post-exercise clearance, sleep recovery depth, and stress load spillover.

Your heart doesn't beat on a metronome. Even at a steady resting rate, the gap between one beat and the next is never exactly the same length twice — it stretches and compresses slightly, beat to beat. HRV, short for heart rate variability, is a measure of how much that gap varies.

Why the variation itself is useful

That might sound like noise, but the size of the variation reflects how your autonomic nervous system is balancing its two modes — the one that speeds things up and the one that calms them back down. More variation between beats is generally read as a sign the calming side has more room to act. Less variation, sustained over time, is one of the earlier signs that stress, poor sleep, illness, or overtraining is catching up with you — often before you'd say you feel any different.

LifeLeaf's version of this idea

On LifeLeaf, HRV isn't shown as a raw number or a score of its own. It's read alongside resting heart rate, against a typical range for your age, and it feeds into the app's Recovery score as one of several named drivers — an overnight HRV reading is one of the inputs behind 'how well you're bouncing back today,' alongside things like sleep recovery depth and how much stress load has spilled into the next day.

That resting-rate-plus-variability pairing is deliberate. A resting rate on its own is one of the more honest numbers a wearable can show, but it moves slowly and it is easy to over-read a single day of it. Variability tends to shift first — often before a change in resting rate, and well before you'd say you feel any different — which is part of why it is treated as an early driver rather than a headline number on its own.

What it is not

  • It isn't an ECG, and it doesn't look for irregular heart rhythms.
  • It isn't an alert system — a low HRV reading won't trigger a warning.
  • If something feels physically wrong, that's a question for a clinician, not a reading to watch.
